Life lessons learned from purchasing a home a few years back. I compromised. I will not make that mistake ever again.

This. I always say that your Main Asset should also serve to protect your Second Asset whenever possible. The crazy part is how many of my neighbors fill their garages with junk and park in the driveway.

Preach. I had to give up my garage AND my restoration project (see Avatar) when I got my new house.

But it was not even really a choice. Either leave my father to die in a nursing home and have a garage or...what I did.

I am sure you had good reasons man. It’s going to work out.

Always buy a house with a garage, so that you can fill it with junk and still end up parking in the driveway

the garage HAS to be extra deep ( enough for the miata + a cherry picker in front of it )

When we were house hunting last year we had a list of musts:

2 bathrooms

A garage

It was not easy to find one in our price range that had everything we were looking. We are glad we found it though.

Only while in “winter storage”. Sits in the shed from May-November :)

After living in several apartments with garages, I said I would never buy a house without a garage... and technically I did not... but the fact the garage is all but useless for me means I still have to park my vehicles outside. For explanation, the truck is 1 in too tall to clear the door, and we would have to loose the automatic garage door. Partners SUV will fit, but because there is no separation between garage and the rest of the house he won’t park in there. If I get a car I’m sure he won’t allow that either. Future plans involve making it a work shop space and an addition with a garage that will work.

I got impatient with the market.

It was in the middle of October, 2014, and the market was on fire. Heck, it still is on fire. Most places were being sold within 1 day of listing at my price point.

It’s weird, because if I waited, I wouldn’t have even gotten ANY house, because they’ve gone up in value so much.

Then you buy the house with a garage, and realize you need a bigger garage.

Same here. Same mistake, same regret. Hoping to build one in another year...

I know the feeling. The market was crazy. If you liked something you had to snap it up fast. We would get a list of houses to visit and by the time we went to tour, they were sold. When we found our house, we put in a contract within 24 hours.

3 car garage! Of course, our Gestapo HOA tickets a homeowner’s car if it is parked in front of your house for more than an hour (they can tell it’s a homeowner’s car due to the sticker on it), so a garage (or a looooooong driveway) really is a necessity.

I compromised and we compromised.

1 car garage not 2.

1.5 bath not 2.

Having a garage was probably the biggest reason I agreed to buy a place.

My previous dwelling was a condo with one covered space, for two cars. I now have a three car garage. Life. Improved.
